The 'van that built New Zealand', the Mitsubishi L300, favoured by tradespeople and school sports groups, used to have one of the worst crash safety records. It seemed to fit this apocalyptic song. When I wrote it a lot of people seemed to be going to work in the morning and not coming home at all.
