about

Joseph Roth’s novel 'The Radetzky March' (the Michael Hofmann translation) has recently entered the top 10 list of my favourite novels. This is from it: ‘Lieutenant Trotta was like a man who had lost not only his home but also his homesickness, his nostalgia for that home.’ It’s a funny line, devastating too. To not feel homesick—unimaginable to me but we all know people like this. I think the song might be about that.
